"Jessica’s ability to make her participants feel heard and valued allowed her to connect with our members at a deep level, even though most of them were only meeting her for the first time. This project might not have worked if it was with anyone else."
Dariel Vasquez, Co-Founder & CEO, Brothers@, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson
Task: Capture the essential characteristics of BAB mentorship as a student-owned, peer-based systems change operation.
Solution: Evaluate the experience and assess the impact of membership in BAB to identify core intervention techniques and academic, social, and personal outcomes.
Process: Clarify goals and establish outcome measures for an impact evaluation using surveys and interviews of BAB alumni regarding BAB member educational experiences and post-graduate careers.
Outcome: Identified the key characteristics of BAB members, experiences during college and with BAB, and academic, social and personal outcomes of membership. Our report, Our Space: Transformation Through Ownership for Collegiate Men of Color in Brothers At Bard – A Qualitative Study of Alumni at Bard College amplified impact and clarified vision, contributing to successful fundraising with thousands of dollars raised, staff capacity building, and transformation from a Bard College-centered operation to Brothers@, national and regional platform for high school and college mentorship of young men of color.
